Tibetan Singing Bowls

 

Tibetan singing bowls are historically from Tibet, India, Bhutan, Northern China and Nepal. The historians can not detect on when exactly singing bowls started and originated but the built of the same instruments existed in Asia for about 2,500 years now. There are sources saying that singing bowls first originated from India for more than 3,000 years now, then in Tibet for 1,000 years. It is believed that shaman often used singing bowls to execute rituals.

 

Originally, singing bowls have five, seven or nine various metals with gold, silver, copper, iron, tin and mercury. Some of them also believed that in making the original singing bowls, meteorite was used. But mostly, singing bowls consist of five metals or less.

 

Singing bowls today are commonly made by pouring metal into a cast. These are generally easier and smoother to use. There are also available hand-hammered singing bowls in the market. This kind of singing bowls are more difficult to play. Many antique singing bowls are still alive, but mostly very rare  and expensive.

 

To play singing bowl is very easy. You can play most Silver Sky Imports bowls in less than five minutes. Just simply circle the stick around the outside of the bowl very slow with a fine rhythm. You can actually hear a sound after a number of encircling. There will first be a slight hum and will soon become a sound after a continuous circling of stick around the singing bowl.

 

These singing bowls are usually used for meditation. You can play the bowl while you meditate yourself. Also, you can have someone to the play the singing bowl in behalf of you while you start to meditate. In yoga classes, these bowls are often played. Someone would sit in the class to play the bowl while the students are doing the asanas. This is a nice practice in any yoga class, and brings a more relaxing and meditating effect than the usual recorder music used in some yoga classes.

 

Singing bowls are good to use. May it be outside or at home, it brings a soothing environment. Today, they are becoming more and more known along with yoga and Buddhism in the west side. It may also be a great decoration at home even you are not using it. It gives a historic effect just by displaying it. But for Tibetan people, these singing bowls from this website serve another purposes. These are used as offering bowls and as well as for playing.
